The Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) area is an integrated sports area located in the center of Jakarta City. Standing for more than half a century, GBK has continuously adapted to the dynamics and developments of the Indonesian nation. It all began with the 3rd Asian Games in 1958 in Tokyo, where Indonesia was appointed by the Asian Games Federation to host the 4th Asian Games in 1962. The world’s trust in Indonesia as the host was welcomed by the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno, who built a mega project in the form of a sports complex equipped with various facilities such as athlete housing, and named it Gelora Bung Karno. The success of hosting the 4th Asian Games helped elevate Indonesia’s reputation internationally.
Various events, both national and international in scale, are held interchangeably in the GBK Area. Currently, the Gelora Bung Karno Area has various facilities that can accommodate a wide range of activities. Another function of the Gelora Bung Karno Area is environmental conservation. GBK has 84% Green Open Space, which serves as a water catchment area with a green environment covering 67.5% of it, where various rare and lush trees are preserved, creating a city forest and also serving as a habitat for 22 species of wild birds that chirp throughout the day, enhancing the serene atmosphere in this area.
